If the battery voltage is above 12 volts (that is the normal terminal voltage of 13.8), Zener conducts and Green LED lights and Red LED remains off. If the battery voltage is below 11.5 volts, Zener remains non conducting and Green LED remains off and Red LED lights.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the voltage of the battery changes when it dies. The voltage remains the same, it produces less current as it drains.

@crabchurch the voltage of a lead acid battery varies depending on the state of charge, the nominal stated value of a charged battery is 13.2v the recommended minimum shut off value 11.8v the nominal maximum voltage for a charger is 14.2v and a float charger of approximately13.6v.

You are right crabchurch, you are wrong. The voltage of a battery does indeed change as the battery drains (dies). You might try thinking less, and consider purchasing a multimeter.
