The control input at pin 5 can be used to achieve PWM or PPM modes of operation. Try applying varying voltage (ex. sinusoidal) to this input.

the reason this is called a 555 timer is because of the three 5k ohm resistors, which set threshold and triger levels. By applying voltage to ctrl pin, you can change those levels. More info: https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/waveforms/555_timer.html
