Logic Data Line and the results. Less current

I need feedback,  Would this circuit work check the status of a digital output line?  Can this circuit be simplified?

It works, as is. For a LED current of 20mA you don’t need 4mA base current. With the default EC transistor gain of 100 you could increase base resistors to 15k and save a bit of current.

An obvious simplification would be to remove half the circuit and have a single LED which is on or off, depending on logic input level.

So you use the half that gives you what you want, ie NPN gives high=LED on, low gives LED off. PNP gives high=LED off, low=LED on.
