Ha- yeah that works! Although the 555 might not be necessary here. It should give a reliable output voltage (in hopes of avoiding a misfire) but I think the same result could be obtained with a small RC network on the base of a transistor. Now if you wanna step it up a notch, and put that 555 to good use, configure the chip for a push and hold astable output. If you get the frequency hammering just shy of the system's input tolerance, I think you'd have yourself a sweet rapid fire/turbo button! Which might just keep you from carpal tunnel too hehe..
