What's the proper way to uses this circuit. Like what resistors do I need for the transistor and would a diode be useful just wondering for the using with a microcontroller because I know relays can cause a fly back voltage from the coil and can damage delicate electronics and most microcontrollers can't power the relay by it self 30ma max draw from logic pins

depends on the relay. 2.2k is probably a safe bet. relay coil needs a flywheel diode or snub circuit. microcontroller needs a bypass capacitor across it too with a series resistor. put a 5.1V zener parallel with it if you're really concerned
