This is like the digital example (https://everycircuit.com/circuit/6451635035439104), except the gate voltage can be continuous between GND and VDD by changing the wiper position. Note how a minimum voltage difference is required before current starts to flow. That's called the "threshold voltage", V_t, and approximately the V_GS (or V_SG) when the transistor will begin conducting.
