Well, if you look at the base pulses carefully you will see that the pnp base voltage is being pulled down when the npn turns on. It is not neccessarily a negative voltage that turns on the pnp transistor, the base needs to be more negative than the emitter terminal. Remember the pnp voltage divider bias and also the two biasing rules.
