My class wants to know why some 20+ components when just a few would do? Next question is, what electronic principle is the circuit teaching about?

@wyoelk, can you demonstrate your version, im scaptical your class can do it with much less components. Probably a missunderstanding what this circuit is all about. Check again 'adder' A+B=C while A,B and C are 4bit + 4bit = 5bit arguments

In addition to the missing carry, beginners might be served better if you separated the addends or explained the ordering you have chosen.

1 bit adder with carry in and out are probably more educational then 4 bit ones where wiring is a nightmare.

Couple things, we are a study group more than a class who want to learn about anything, woodwork, model trains, automotive and electronic(top of the list). After researching adders and now understanding their use we separated the components and see why it was done this way. Our thanks to all for the help
