Your use of AC is fine but you need to either change your relay coil voltage to a lower voltage or change the supply to the 555 to a higher voltage.

That seemed to smooth things out, thank you. I'm new to all of this, so I don't fully understand why I needed to do that. Is it because my output voltage was too close to my coil activation voltage?
