Opening an high inductive circuit May result una kickback due To parasitic capacitance of the breaker. In this case a diode May be useful ti avoid abrupt current variation and the conseguence of back electro motive Force.

no need for a "parasitic" capacitance, its the natur of inductivities! http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5756558894694400

This is True but parasitic capacitance however exits. When two conductors are separated by a dielectric material just like the moving contacts of a breaker separated by a gas we have a capacitor and this causes an oscillatory transient whose overshoot is not less significant than the kickback of the inductance only. On the other side, the LC part of the circuit is excited just by The back emf of the inductance when The current changes.
