Here's an idea, add a cap and a diode, not an LED, so there isn't a voltage spike and the relay can close safely.

I can see your concept and it's very inovative. A 16 ohm LED resistor will keep the current at a respectible 20mA.

Unfortunately it's Not a 20mA LED and putting a resistor and tune it as long 20mA is reach can the last IDIOT on everycircuit. What I see is a 15mA Led and its resistor is around 33.5Ohm and NOT 16Ohm. Lenny please read the circuit again.

@dukxud, I inadvertently overlooked your LED's power rating, this is easily rectified, if you choose to alter your LED from 15mA to 20mA, simply increase the 16 ohm LED resistor to 25 ohms.
