Sorry i think the amplifier consumes too large of current from the signal source.

yes, you can have a preamp before it, the preamp i used was an AM modulator that provided a little more current than if the signal came straight from a crystal oscillator. Although it did work fine when directly connected to the output of a crystal oscillator.
