The ULN2003 is a very versatile driver chip. It's guts contain a high voltage/high current darlington transistor array. Various different loads could be driven with this chip. A common situation is microcontrollers that need to drive relays. This can very conveniently done through the ULN2003. What is the function or the 3 diodes ? When they are disconnected, circuit seems to run properly..

Ithink the're like a protection when you're using motors or when you give too much voltage on the base

The diodes are free-wheeling diodes. They're there to make the ULN2003 be able to drive inductive loads and supress the kickback voltage.
