If I didn't know anything about transistors yet, after observing your demonstration I think they would remain a mystery. I would probably notice that the LED only lights when the AC voltage at the base goes positive, but that should make sense even to a newbie. I would probably be asking, "where's that current regulation he was talking about?"..
