This is roughly equivalent to a coupled LED and Photo-FET; the voltage source simulates what the light would do to cause an electric field in the FET since the intensity of the light from an LED (and thus induced E field) is roughly proportional to the current through it under operating conditions.  
Note that, as a 4-terminal device, there is no current transferred between the two sides.
