When the switch is changed from ground to 5V, the circuits output will hold high for a given time, then go back low. The Schmidt trigger allows the circuit to have a sharp edge when switching from high to low states. The time the pulse is generated can be adjusted by changing the capacitor and resistor that correspond to it's RC time constant.
