This is an example of how to safely integrate an induction load to your Arduino project.
A flywheel diode is in place with the inductor (the relay) to safely dissipate any back voltage back to it self when the circuit has deenergized.

Why the transistor though?

thenoname: switch for relay that require higher energy source (not display in this circuit) or secondary protection against from a induction load.
