Can someone explain me how come that mini circuit at the top is the same as the beginning of a bigger circuit? It's a bit confusing to me. And what is the purpose of having capacitor in this circuit? Discharging through resistor while connection is off?

Top is in series. Bottom is parallel.

Try this circuit, but add an led and resistor in series in place of voltmeter at the end. https://everycircuit.com/circuit/6326559533957120.

Ohh, I see. So basically capacitor's role here is to smooth the blinking diodes not to shut down immediatelly? Thank you!

Look at this circuit _ _ https://everycircuit.com/circuit/6200651313577984 _ _ Remember the goal of a rectifier is to change the voltage position. Just a side note, some users think an led is a diode capable of being in a rectifying position. Possible, yes. Good idea, never due to heat, internal resistance, etc...
