Also called a Clamping circuit. The diodes remain off when the input signal is within the range of the upper and lower voltages plus the required diode drop (VF). The circuit on the left shows clamping to (3.3 + VF) and (ground - VF), and the circuit on the right uses (ground + VF) and (ground - VF).
