Using a NE555 as a monostable timer with the reset pin connected to Vin results in an unwanted high state on the output pin when the power source is connected. The upper half of the circuit only acts for ~10mS (since Vin is connected) keeping the reset pin to a low state, then it returns to a high state without absorbing any additional current. I've found this useful in car applications.
