ok redesigned out of curiosity..

in this design they are 2n2222 generic npn transistors, they both pass 0.5w in total driving a 1watt led... 0.265watt resistor

Hi, can't you protect the Led when potar is under 4.97% ? Of course it's not the purpose of your circuit but I feel not well when I see a Led crashing ^^

it is protected with the 1k to ground

Yes but if you go under 4.97% you crash the Led. So where is really the protection ? I don't really understand.

the idea is that you can swap the LED with a high powered one and adjust the pot...
