OR gate

turns out we need a pull down resistor on the inputs of the gate to make this work.

Yes. When connecting switches to logic, you should always use pull-down or pull-up resistors unless your logic family doesn't require one. If I remember right, TTL and its variants don't require pull-up resistors. Some of EC's components don't require pull-down resistors, but it's better to use them anyway.

I never understood why to use or- gates. Simply connect the two wires together and boom, you have an or- gate...
