This is a reverse engineering of an incredibly cheap Chinese bug zapper night light which plugs into standard wall mains. The goal is to modify the circuit so that if the load (represented by the switch on the lower right) is shorted by anything other than a bug it will not explode. Any suggestions to modify this circuit with more expensive stable components I am all ears!!

Yikes! That is cheap and dangerous, even insulated from electric shock this poses a fire hazard. If you want to build your own use a low voltage power supply to isolate from mains, add a generic voltage step up.

I dont understand the problem here. The source should be ~170 peak (RMS*1.414). When the switch remains closed the peak current of 170uA flows though the circuit. That means this circuit is dissipating ~15mW (Vp*Ip/2). Is there a resistor representing the bug?

Were is the explosion with only 15mW? Chinese engineers are better then you expected!
