This simple IR transmitter is very powerful. It can be used in long range IR applications. It can be used with IR beam breaker circuit to make IR security for your home. If you want to increase its range to more longer distances, you can use optical lenses with it to focus the IR beam. Q1 and Q2 are general purpose transistors so you can use anyone here.

Hmm, I'm not so sure- what 'general purpose' transistors are rated for that much power, and with that monstrous beta? And a 300+mA IR LED?..
