While both circuits function, they both have high currents particularly in the off state, this can be over come by a pnp circuit, http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5994964399161344

Change on/off (current/no current) label at input to off/on (no current/current) and you can still use a NPN http://everycircuit.com/circuit/6534803401998336
