The principles of Beat frequency oscillators is thoroughly explained on the web so I won't go into details. I'll just add that this needs an audio frequency amp to boost the audible detection.

Needs some touching up though. I have to make the oscillator on the right more powerful and with adjustable power , for more depth and better sorting

It works by comparing two frequencies, one of which is fixed, and the other one varies due to the coil in the tank circuit changing its inductance in a presence of a metal object. The two frequencies are mixed and filtered and the audible result signals the person for a metal object.
