Maybe it's a bug in the simulator. If it would work in real life though, then I guess people are so used to having a 1:1 ratio with LEDs and resistors.

It's 8 LEDs in parallel fed via a series resistor. No smoke and mirrors here :-)

The problem with this method is that if any LEDs fail (open circuit) then the others share the extra 20mA so they are then more likely to fail too.

Other problem arises when using LEDs of different colours, as their forward voltages differ. As result, current isn't distributed evenly between LEDs

Even LEDs of same colour can vary hence why you usually see a 1:1 led/resistor ratio.
