If wall switch boxes or outlets are plastered or covered over you can use a magnetic compass to help locate them. I tried magnetic compass over wall switches and outlets, most of them facing north. I would get about 25 to 30 degree deflection when I was very near the outlet box. All had power on, so I do not know if simply metal boxes would be enough to show on compass needle?
