Very basic, no regulation and no capacity.

Thanks for the comment, I'm only a self taught enthusiast. I am trying to charge a VL 2330 3v coin battery from a 5v USB so that the battery takes over when the 5v is removed, the said circuit runs on 3v. Any advice greatly appreciated.

The VL 2330 battery has a 50mA capacity, the float charge for a normal rechargeable battery is 1mA per amp hour. Therefore this battery needs a float charge of 50uA, Panasonic recommend that constant voltage rather than constant current be used. Check https://industrial.panasonic.com/cdbs/www-data/pdf/AAA4000/AAA4000COL17.pdf. Then all that is necessary is to implement the lower voltage battery as a backup power.
