Двійковий декодер використовується для перетворення двійкової інформації: він перетворює вхідний двійковий код у вибраний вихідний формат. Наприклад, на схемі показано 2-4 двійковий декодер, який перетворює 2 біти на 4-бітний вихід. Важливо зауважити, що у виході лише один біт є 1 (високим).  
Декодери мають безліч застосувань, наприклад, можна уявити, що цей декодер активує один із 4 пристроїв, передаючи йому імпульс.
