Hmm. When I press either button it shorts a voltage source. Could you please explain more fully what your circuit does?

Just remove the AC source and then it seems to work as intended.

Ah that does seems better. But why does the MOSFET remain ON after the upper button is released?

The mosfet gate works on voltage but draws very little current, so it will techincally turn off eventually but takes a long time (which is why you need pull up/down resistors for switching them). With a capacitor on the gate you cam treat it as being on indefinetly.
