From Wikipedia. Would current flowing back into the voltage source like this damage it?

no, but it needs probably an extra capacitor in parallel to not use the mains as antenna

What value of capacitor? Something like 10 uF?

depends on the oscillator frequency. The impedance must be low enough at this frequency. 10uF is mostlikely much to big. So speculate a colpitts runs at some MHz it should be big enough to use 10nF ceramic capacitor to short high frequrncies.

How fast can this run in theory?

"fast"? I think with discreet componemts for L and C as resonator, the maximum frequency (fastness;-) is a little above 100MHz. Maybe 200MHz
