Its a cool circuit but what are the diodes for?

Great question! Honestly I made this circuit a while ago and I can't totally remember what each part does but I believe that the two diodes are what allow the circuit to latch to the high or low state. However I could be totally wrong and maybe you don't need them at all! Feel free to modify the circuit and see! what effect the diodes have (if any) on the circuit
