Not exactly sure why increasing the resistance via whipe position causes leds to blow. I though it would kind of close the gate on the pnp bjt causing the leds to actually dim .. unless with a pnp it's in reverse and more resistance causes more currebt to flow?

Hi, the pnp when you close emitter to collector with a little drope (minor so you can ignore for the moment). Led support only 2v and when you think increasing the resistance in this circuit happen you short + to - and close e to c you let transistor pass more power. So too bad in the real life... Change the pnp to npn. You have to add resistance to the base and one to the led's
