Early ship type transmitter. From left, 60 cycle A.C. power input with telegraph key the bottom switch. Signal through step up transformer to jump sparkgap (2 kilowatts of power, and this is LOUD!!!) Where name of "sparks" for operator came from.
Next on right, is adjustable tapped coils , picture arrows on ends of closed switches when in center of coils.
Antenna on right is a lot of wire strung on ship.
Before word "radio" was invented they was a ship's AEROGRAPHER - (A er og ra pher).
The first radio operator's license issued, #1, was to James M. Baskerville examined at New York Navy Yard on May 25, 1911.
