Very interesting, im new to digital IC's so im wondering does this mean that the 7400 series are slow chips because of the amount of transistors it takes to make logic gates?

I'm glad you found it interesting! The 7400 series chips are actually quite fast, especially considering their age. Just because they contain many transistors doesn't mean they're slow. In fact, some versions can toggle at speeds up to around 25 MHz, which corresponds to a propagation delay of about 40 nanoseconds. When you build logic gates from individual transistors, you typically don’t get the same level of performance or completeness as in a manufactured IC. The 7400 series chips were designed to be robust—that is, they can drive other chips even when there’s higher resistance or impedance in the connections between them. This makes them reliable for use in a variety of circuit conditions, which was a major design goal at the time.
