I literally have no idea how using transistor is simpler than just using the resistor to limit the current flow through the diode, you're drawing twice the current you would to dissipate energy than you would if you just used a simple resistor

@ETJAKEOC this is a much better circuit than a simple resistor when driving a high power led or a laser diode, because as those components heat up they tend to draw more current which increases the temperature, its a positive feedback that can quickly fry components. You would not use this circuit for simple indication leds.

Makes sense, but this is what PWM has mostly replaced these days in these instances, no? Like styropyro's hand laser cannon (if you haven't seen, you should), he uses PWM with D and F adjustments to control the lasers total output energy. More efficiency in switching a load on and off and stabilizing it's flow than just attempting to divert/reduce flow using always active components, but of course more complex, and now requires the energy to drive the PWM pulses

Good point, maybe for sensitive equipment that switching noise could interfere with the device and sacrificing power efficiency for better operation is easier and more desirable, just spit balling.
