The capacitor helps to discharge the coil and the diode prevents a voltage spike. The resistor helps with preventing overcurrent from the pins.

As yourself have noticed you just changed the problem but it's not solved. The high voltage is gone, but now you have a high current which you tried to limited with the 10 Ohm. I won't drive a relay from a controller and a 68uF cap in parallel. Capacitor are as bad as coils. While on because of its I rush current and the other because of high Emf voltage. You ended with 10 Ohm in series to the digital control pin which drops significant the voltage across the relay. Not sure if this is an advice an experienced engineer would give. But you are young and can call it "nice try"
