Prices of Variacs are more affordable than times past.  This circuit allows increase in power by steps.

Use simulator to pick component values and slowly increase voltage and amperes in steps between voltage divider resistors.  Use proper safety and wattage resistors for line voltage.

A current limiting light bulb to equipment can be added if needed.
