It needs daylight(white lamp) to charge the battery(100mF cap) (turn the switch "ON"). When it turns nightime the LED turns "ON" Intil the battery dies or when light hits the solar cell (turn the switch back "ON"). The LED is also regulated so the LED light is just as bright at different voltages from the battery.
