The current can flow only through the voltmeter and we don't know it's characteristics. You should add a load on output for a known functioning.

You can add a voltmeter in series. It has a very high resistance (theoretically infinite). Therefore, current will not flow through the volt meter. Remove it.

EC needs always ground connected to circuit to work properly. Maybe in this case, EC can't work properly with ground through voltmeter ?

Ideal voltmeter is used to measure the potential difference between 2 nodes and not to conduct current. So it's ideally considered as an open circuit. And so ground signal is considered not connected to the circuit.
