Ok, start at supply voltage. Mains are given as RMS value 240Vrms! In EC values are peak voltage for AC sources. 240Vrms is 339Vpeak. I recommand to start at examples with simple R networks. I know this is boring, but there is from my experience no way around to learn the basics before design power supplies. Hope this helps.

Thank you , good info about the RMS of mains.. but for now, I'll take your advice and dig around in the R networks....
