Basically a diode is a component that allows current to flow from one direction, but not from the opposite direction. This is a very general description, there are different types of diodes (such as LEDs, light emitting diodes) with different purposes

There's also a zener diode,which is reverse biased in one direction and is reverse biased in the other direction until a potential difference of 10 volts is provided.I also find Internet a great source of information for all the levels of learning

Zener diode allows current flow backwards after a certain reverse voltage not only 10V.
