Would this work as a cheapo overdrive pedal?

No, guitar output voltage is 100mV for passive pickups. That's not enough voltage to go through a diode. Also your decreasing the amplitude, a overdrive increases amplitude then it clips the wave to keep from over modulating.

So a 100mV AC source and an op-amp would be in order?

discard the 20u cap , does nothing. Drop the 10k resistor to 1k . inc the 6k if needed fo volume. youll need to use a couple of resistors to create your 0 V,
