It is difficult to build this without a bulky transformer; you're purely relying on the energy stored by the inductor.

Yes that isn't completely true. You can use a transformer from a plasma TV and wrap your primary accordingly. If your looking for something with more amps of course you'll need a huge transformer. This is more of a bug zapper than anything
