I KNOW ITS EXTREMELY INEFFICIENT! This circuit uses a transistor as a diode to ensure only positive voltage comes through. It is incredibly inefficient and has large voltage and current losses

Isn't the emitter-base current peaking 2 Ampere unnecessarily high? I recommend a current limiting resistor at base.

You can make a BJT to a diode by connecting base and collector together. Unfortunately the reverse voltage is very limited, most little transistors can withstand 5V and not more, but it works.
