mostly a theft from faceblast 00: coast (power in inductor is regenerated so no magnetic braking) 01: forward 10: reverse 11: braking (current in inductor freewheels and causes magnetic braking)

That's a great setup. If only we can place a motor on it that changes over to a generator.

nope, DC brushed motor coasts when the coil is open. short the terminals and it becomes much harder to turn the coil. try it out, it's amazing how much more force it needs to turn the coil

Oh, the short (11) lets the current freewheel and that is sort of like sliding a magnet down the side of a sheet of aluminum... it goes very slow (breaking). So while on the other hand (00) causes the power stored in inductance to regenerate but then the motor mass just keeps on turning... I got it... NOW.

@rich, I seem to recall that any induction machine can act as a generator. E.g. if a load pulls a motor faster than the line power connected, it is called overhauling. http://machinedesign.com/motorsdrives/regeneration-adjustable-frequency-drives However, looking at this H-bridge now I am fairly sure VFD (another name for adjustable frequency drive) do regenerative speed control with some magic I don't really understand.

Its easy to see how a dc motor will regenerate on your bridge here but a brushless vfd is where it gets hairy.
