5v switch for 12v LED Strip

I plan to install 12v LED strips on an RC plane.  I have an RC controlled 5v supply I can switch on/off with my radio.  Plane is powered by a 12v LIPO battery. I'm hoping a simple transistor and resistor circuit above will let me achieve my goal.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Connect 12V source - to ground and use the transistor to connect the cathodes to ground, remember, emitter towards the lower voltage potential, eg reverse polarity on your transistor too
