The mosfet has absolutely no function in this circuit. When npn base has a higher voltage than the collector,the whole transistor behaves as if the collector and emiter were exchanged. Hence, when the base voltage exceeds the collector voltage by the saturation amount, the transistor opens and the current peak is sucked from the capacitor. Hence the steps down. Don't be afraid, the negative voltage won't go to minus infinity, it won't exceed -400mV much.
