N-mos in Series and P-mos in Parallel, produces NAND, P and Nmos in series acts as NOT gate and inverses the result

I have noticed that there are a fairly large number of components in this discrete component and gate. The question is why don't we use established diode transistor style discreet gates in place of these wondrous science projects?
